Silambam is a martial art that doubles as a competitive sport. It is one of the oldest weapons-based systems in the world, once patronized by the Chola and Pandya kings.
The Staff: Players use a bamboo staff, the length of which is measured from the ground to the player's forehead.
The Technique: The game involves rapid-fire spinning, strikes, and blocks. Players move in circular patterns (Chuvadu) to confuse their opponent.
The Competition: In a match, points are awarded for "touches" on the opponent's body or for disarming them. It requires incredible wrist flexibility, footwork, and focus.
