Jallikattu is a high-octane spectacle traditionally held during the Pongal harvest festival, particularly in the Madurai district. Unlike Spanish bullfighting, the goal is not to kill or harm the animal, but to embrace it.
The Preparation: Bulls are specifically bred and trained for this event; they are often the pride of a village temple.
The Gameplay: The bull is released through a narrow gate called the Vadi Vasal. As it bolts out, a participant (the "tamer") must grab the bull’s hump. To be declared a winner, the player must hold onto the hump for a specific distance, three jumps of the bull, or a set time limit (usually 30 seconds).
The Stakes: If the player succeeds, they win prizes like gold coins or household goods. If the bull escapes untouched, the owner of the bull is rewarded. It is considered a test of courage and physical stamina.
